In 2002, the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) was created for skilled individuals wishing to remain or to come to the United Kingdom to work as employed or self-employed persons. Now, the UK has created a Five-Tier immigration system, where Tier 1 (General) visa for general highly skilled migrants has replaced the HSMP. As of April 1, 2009, you must hold a Master's degree or higher to be eligible for the Tier 1 (General) Skilled Worker category.
Tier 1 (General) is similar to the previous HSMP. One notable exception is the removal of the MBA provision which allowed those with MBAs from a list of specific universities to claim an automatic 75 points. English language requirements are also more stringent. You can use our Tier 1 General Highly Skilled Workers points calculator to assess your chances of being granted a Tier 1 visa under this sub-category.
You must score 75 points to be eligible to immigrate to the UK as a Tier 1 (General) Migrant. You do not need a prior job offer and are free to take up self employment opportunities once you gain approval under this category. Under the Tier 1, you must also score an additional 10 points for the English language requirement and another 10 points for the Maintenance requirement. Submit your details here to have your points score calculated for entry to the UK.
